New Australian Standard requirements
As a duty of care, we bring this information to your attention.
Standards Australia has published a new Australian Standard for Automatic Doors entitled AS5007 'Powered doors for pedestrian access and egress', effective from 12 September 2007, which replaces existing standards AS4085 'Automatic sliding door assemblies' and 'AS4290 'Automatic revolving door assemblies'.
AS5007 sets out requirements for all automatic pedestrian door assemblies and includes changes that reflect recent advances in technology. Note: This new standard does not cover vertical door leaves, vehicular traffic doors, gates, barriers, turn stiles, lift doors or explosion proof doors.
In particular, new safety and maintenance requirements for automatic pedestrian door assemblies are set out in the standard which are included to identify, avoid and safeguard against any crushing, shearing and draw-in hazards during the door opening and closing movements.
Regular inspection and maintenance of the automatic door entrance is important to ensure safe operation, long term reliability and working efficiency of the automatic door entrance, including safety devices and safety systems.
AS5007 calls for inspection and maintenance of the equipment on a quarterly basis (clause 7.4) and at intervals not exceeding 4 months (clause E2.2). The building owner or agent responsible for the safe operation and maintenance of powered doors shall consider each individual installation and adopt safety check and planned maintenance procedures.
If at any stage the equipment is deemed to be unsafe, the equipment shall be rendered to a condition such that the doors are not a danger to the persons that utilise the doorway.
All system attendances, inspections, testing, service and maintenance procedures shall be systematically recorded in a log book or software program dedicated and maintained for this purpose. The log shall be retained by the building owner or agent and available upon request by a relevant Government authority or authorised certifying agent. Where multiple installations operate in a single complex, a log shall be dedicated to each doorway installation.
Any work required shall be carried out by a person qualified in the maintenance of pedestrian door equipment in accordance with recognised industry practice.
Byrnes Entrance Technology provides a complete service and preventative maintenance program by qualified technicians to ensure that all installed equipment complies to and is inspected and maintained to the new requirements of AS5007.
